After college, he attended Texas Tech University School of Law, where he quickly distinguished himself as a zealous advocate. He was ranked first in his class in advocacy competition points and won the ABA National Championship in Arbitration, a Mock Trial Championship, and a Moot Court Championship. Michael also served as an Editor for the Texas Tech Law Review, graduated with honors, and received the George W. and Sarah H. Dupree Award for Outstanding Achievement in Law School.
