Woods River, Nebraska Plant Explosion Involved Stillage Tank
Wood River Fire & Rescue was called to the Green Plains ethanol plant, located along 140th Road South, shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 17th.
A company spokesperson later said that the facility was not operational at the time and confirmed that a plant employee had been killed during routine maintenance and repairs on a whole stillage tank. The deceased worker has since been identified as a 49-year-old man from Grand Island, Nebraska.
A second employee injured in the Green Plains ethanol plant explosion was taken to a hospital in Omaha where he remains in critical condition. Paramedics also transferred three contract workers to a local hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released the same day.
Green Plains Ethanol Plant Explosion Not Related to Previous Fire
The Wood River plant is one of 11 biorefineries owned by Omaha-based Green Plains.
While the cause of the Woods River, Nebraska, plant explosion has yet to be identified, officials suspect that it was connected to the work being done at the facility. They have also ruled out any relationship to a fire that occurred at the same Green Plains plant on April 14th
That blaze started in a grain leg, a loading elevator that transports grain to the bin. Although the fire destroyed the grain leg and caused around $2 million in damage, no one was injured.
