What Are My Rights Under The Jones Act?

VIDEO POSTER

If you quality as a Jones Act Seaman and you’ve been injured offshore you have a number of rights available to you. First of all, you’re entitled to transportation, being taken ashore for treatment. Also, your employer’s going to have to pay for that medical treatment and you’re free to use a doctor of your choosing. In fact, we encourage you to do so. They’ll also have to pay you what’s called maintenance, that’s daily room and board. Typically somewhere between 30 and 40 dollars a day. Under the Jones Act, one of the best attributes of it, is that it gives you the right to sue your employer for negligence. That means if you got hurt and it was your employer’s fault or one of your fellow employees you can hold them responsible.
