What is the Jones Act and What Protections Does it Provide to Workers Injured Offshore?

VIDEO POSTER

The Jones Act is a federal law, also known as the Merchant Marine Act of 1923, that exists to protect seaman when they’re injured while working offshore.

In order to be covered under the Jones Act, you have to be a “seaman,” which is defined as someone injured (1) in the service of a vessel or fleet of vessels (2) under common ownership (3) while the vessel or fleet of vessels is in navigation.
