Update: What Caused the Pasadena SunEdison Plant Explosion?

On Friday October 2, 2015, a violent plant explosion at the SunEdison facility in Pasadena, Texas seriously injured 4 workers.

According to an article released today, the explosion and subsequent fire were found to have been caused by a silane leak that occurred as the 4 workers were “conducting maintenance.”

Unfortunately, silanes are known to explode upon coming into contact with the air.

While the investigation into why the leak occurred remains ongoing, it is clear that something went terribly wrong that day for a compound as dangerous as silane to be released.

The Pasadena plant uses silane to produce granular polysilicon which SunEdison in turn uses to make solar wafers.

These wafers are then distributed by the company to its solar cell and module suppliers for sale to photovoltaic power plants.

While 3 of the injured workers have been released from the hospital, the fourth remains as he continues to battle severe chemical burns.
